How Much Does Cabinet Painting Cost?
Cabinet repainting is one of the highest-value jobs we do, because it's almost always cheaper than replacing the cabinets outright while looking like a full renovation. Here's what goes into the price.
Why cabinets cost more per square foot than walls
Cabinet doors and drawer fronts get removed, cleaned, sanded, and usually sprayed off site in a controlled space for a factory-smooth finish, rather than brushed in place. That's more labour and more setup than rolling a wall, which is why cabinets are priced by the door and drawer, not the room. The boxes themselves (the frames that stay in the kitchen) are typically sprayed or carefully brushed in place with everything else in the kitchen masked off.
What changes the number
The material matters: laminate and thermofoil cabinets need a different primer than solid wood or MDF, and some finishes (like existing high-gloss lacquer) need extra sanding to get paint to grip. The number of doors and drawers is the biggest factor, followed by whether you're keeping the existing hardware or changing it, and whether the boxes need spraying too or just the doors.

As a rough general guide, a full kitchen's worth of cabinetry (doors, drawers and boxes) typically runs from the low thousands into the higher single-thousands of dollars depending on kitchen size and finish, with vanities and smaller cabinet runs priced well below that. This is meant to help you budget roughly. The only way to get a real number is to have the kitchen looked at.
Why homeowners choose repainting over replacement
New cabinetry for an average kitchen typically costs several times more than a repaint, before you factor in installation and the disruption of ripping out working cabinet boxes. If the boxes themselves are solid, repainting gets you a new look without any of that.
